Laura's Story
Life
Right now I'm getting ready to start a business with my youngest daughter - Anna, we're going to combine our massage business with a friend who has an all-service beauty salon! We're excited about it. I have my Masters in Education, I waited until my five children were almost grown and I was newly divorced to go back to school at CSUB. I taught for awhile but I'm ready for sometime new. I was at the 40 year reunion, I went with Ann Litterell. Everyone recognized her, but no one recognized me, I guess its my RED hair.
School
I think I was a late bloomer, if I bloomed at all. I should have waited until my senior year to start as a freshman! I only dated one North High guy, Eddie Grimes, I seemed to have a thing for South High and Arvin guys. Mr. Kinnet was my favorite teacher he always gave me an A, and his class was fun and sometimes crazy. The funniest thing I remember happened in Mr. Bootman's biology class. All the boys knew how I felt about snakes- one day when I was not sitting in my seat, someone got hold of my straw purse, when class finished I opened it to put up my pencil, but there was a snake in it, Mr. Bootman had quite a time getting me to stop screaming!
But then there was the time in chorus (our new teacher had a German name) he would always call me Miss Shoemker- well, I was busy yaking with someonelse in class and he said,"Miss Shoemaker, shape up!" My reply was,"Oh, I want to, I want to." I probably weighed a whole buck at the time. Then there was the time in Enlish lit when we had to read aloud our own stories we wrote. For some reason I was ahead of my time, everything I wrote was like something from Steven King (not necessarialy S. King quality though) I really wanted a good grade and because I would get s...Expand for more
o nervous in front of the class I decided to turn out the lights and read my story holding a red candle. After I blew out the candle and the lights were on, all the girls started screaming. I thought, wow I must have done a really great job -until I looked down at the white sweater I was wearing- red candle wax had dripped on the front and looked just like blood!
Workplace
My ex-husband didn't want me to work so at first I stayed home with our kids (which I don't regret) but finally I did go to work full time, 3 years at a propane company, several booking gigs, and my ex was a builder so I got my Real Estate License (his idea) and that was my favorite job. Well, maybe second favorite I was a house mother to fifteen boys in a boy's home in Oklahoma, Westview Boys' Home, with the four of our own then, that gave us 19 kids, maybe sometime I'll write about that experience, not now though its almost a mini series in itself. I guess some would think the six years I worked in the California prison system were scary, but compared to some public schools I taught in they were calm, and two of my clerks were in for murder, but they were'nt disrespectful.
My children. All five had some pretty tough times growing up but turned out to be the kind of person I would want as a friend. My oldest, David, died last year at age 42 and I really miss him, he was an extrodinary person and gave me two granddaughters, and two great grandaughters.
The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Tom Pulcher, because he was a really great friend when we were at North High. From ACU it would have to be Doug McBee.
My current age is 65. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be gray, wrinkled, and grouchy. I was so completely wrong.
